BSD–based operating systems

FreeBSD is my main driver for both desktops and servers.

I have many years of experience running FreeBSD servers for a variety of different tasks, such as mail, web, file servers, dns servers, and web proxies, as well as more specialized custom tasks.

I also maintain some third–party packages in FreeBSD's Ports tree.

BSD descendants

Operating systems and downstream derivatives

  • FreeBSD
  • NetBSD
  • OpenBSD
  • OPNsense

Linux distributions

Some of the different distros I've worked with:

  • Debian
  • Ubuntu
  • Slackware
  • Arch
  • Gentoo

Linux

I've been running Linux servers since the mid–90s, when I started out with the Red Hat and Slackware distributions of the time.

These days I generally recommend Debian-based distributions for most Linux deployments.

Solaris–based operating systems

The Solaris–descendant eco system offers a lot of interesting technologies:

  • ZFS, an advanced copy–on–write file system
  • Hard containerization via zones
  • Virtualization via bhyve

Solaris → Illumos

Installation and maintenance of servers running operating systems such as:

  • OpenIndiana: A general–purpose server and workstation OS
  • OmniOS CE: A server OS
  • SmartOS: A hypervisor for VMs and containers

Others

More obscure operating systems I've used:

  • HP-UX by Hewlett Packard Enterprise
  • DG/UX by Data General
  • Older SunOS and Solaris

Other operating systems

My experience encompasses much more than the previously listed operating systems.

I have worked with many OSes that have mostly fallen into obscurity, but are still found—and relied upon—in production.

I can also help with virtualizing deprecated systems to keep them operational in a safe way.
